PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display device which uses a liquid crystal light valve, which provide easy maintenance for user, which facilitates analysis of cause on the occurrence of failures, and which has an improved image quality. SOLUTION: The device is equipped with a liquid crystal light valve 4, which modulates and emits an incident light from a lamp 2 and a projection lens 6 which enlarges and projects the light emitted from the liquid crystal light valve 4, and a control circuit 8 is designed to control on/off of a power source 26 or the lamp 2 on the basis of the measurement by a temperature detecting element 30 for measuring temperature near the liquid crystal light valve 4 and a temperature detecting element 32 for measuring temperature outside of a casing.
