PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the subject novel indanylidene compound that has sufficient solubility in fat and oil, is resistant to permeating into skins, effectively absorb ultraviolet rays and bears an indanylidene residue grafted via linking groups to silane, oligosiloxane, polysiloxane groups. SOLUTION: This novel compound is represented by formula I [X is O, NH; R1-R3 are each 1-20C alkyl, a (substituted) 2-20C alkyl or the like or the group YS, or R1 and R2 together form a dioxomethylene ring; R4-R6 are each H or a 1-20C alkyl; n is 0-2; Y is a bonding group; S is silane, oligosiloxane, polysiloxane, where at least one of the residual groups of R1-R3 is YS], typically ethyl cyano-(2,3-dihydro-5,6-dimethoxy-3,3-dimethyl-1H-inden-1-ylidene)acetate. The compound of formula I is prepared by forming an indanylidene compound of formula III from a compound of formula II, for example, according to the Knoevenagel reaction and allowing the compound of formula III to bond to the group YS by the transesterification or the hydrosilylation reaction.
