PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transmission for vehicle capable of being constructed small and at a low cost. SOLUTION: A transmission for a vehicle includes a three-element, two- freedom type epicyclic gearing mechanism 15 configured so that an input shaft 17a is coupled with a sun gear 17 while an output shaft 3 coupled with a carrier 19, a brake is installed on a ring gear 18, and a clutch 25 is provided to couple together the carrier 19 and ring gear 18 for changing over from the L-mode to H-mode and vice versa, wherein the brake is formed from a two-way clutch 28 whose rotation restricting and admitting directions can be changed over externally, and it is made practicable to perform both shifting in advancing and the retreat motion only using the two-way clutch 28.
