PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal composition wide in the temperature range of a liquid crystal phase and having small refractive index anisotropy by mixing a specific bicyclohexylene compound, a fluorine-containing aromatic compound, a dioxane group-containing fluorinated aromatic compound, or the like. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal composition comprises at least one of bicyclohexylene compounds of formula I [R1 is a 1-10C alkyl; R2 is a 1-10C alkyl, an alkoxy or a group of the formula: COOR6 (R6 is the same as R1) as the first component, at least one of fluorine-containing aromatic compounds of formula II (R3 is the same as R1) as the second component, and at least one of 1,3-dioxane group-containing fluorinated aromatic compounds of formula III (R4 is the same as R1; Z1 is a single bond or C2H4) or formula IV (R5 is the same as R1) as the third component. The liquid crystal composition satisfies the general characteristics of transmission type active matrix liquid crystal display elements (AM-LCD) using back lights as light sources, and has the wide temperature range of the nematic phase and small refractive index anisotropy. |
