PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for removing carbon adherent to a carbonizing chamber of coke oven so as to enhance the working efficiency of the coke oven by alternating an operation of injecting air and an operation of injecting e.g. carbon dioxide into a carbonizing chamber after discharging the coke. SOLUTION: This method for removing a gas adapted to react with carbon at high temperatures into a carbonizing chamber 10 through jet nozzles 52a and 52b is conducted by alternating an operating of injecting air and an operation of injecting carbon dioxide and/or steam or a gas containing carbon dioxide and/or steam into a carbonizing chamber 10, thus removing carbon adherent to the carbonizing chamber 10 of the coke oven.
