PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for simulating a load or pressure on a carbonzation chamber wall of a coke oven, which can directly predict a load or pressure on the wall of a commercial oven, and a local load or pressure on the wall, and also to provide a method for efficiently operating a coke oven, based on the results by the simulation method. SOLUTION: This method simulates, based on a discrete element method, a load or pressure on the whole wall of at least one side of a carbonization chamber of a horizontal coke oven, when coke produced in the oven is pushed out by a pusher, and also a local load or pressure on the wall. The method for operating a coke oven controls the operating conditions in such a way to keep the load or pressure, simulated by the above method, at or below the acceptable load or pressure, determined by the conditions of the carbonization chamber wall.
