The invention relates to an electrically heatable glow plug or glow rod for internal combustion engines. Said plug has a corrosion-resistant glow tube that is closed on the end thereof, in which a filling material consisting of electrically non-conductive compacted powder is contained and in which an electrically conductive spiral is embedded. In order to improve the service life of the heating spiral in said glow plug or the glow rod, the electrically conductive spiral is hardened, especially nitride hardened by means of diffusion treatment, at least in part of the longitudinal extension thereof, preferably in the surface area of the heating spiral. This makes it possible for the spiral to withstand mechanical strains without any degradation during the compression process.
