Compounds represented by general formula (I) which are useful as herbicides, wherein (a) represents an optionally substituted polycyclic heterocyclic group having a nitrogen atom attached to the 2-position of a thiazolone ring as a constituting atom; and R?1 and R2¿ independently represent each hydrogen, halogeno, cyano, optionally substituted phenyl, lower alkoxycarbonyl, halogenated lower alkoxycarbonyl, lower alkenyloxycarbonyl, lower alkynyloxycarbonyl, optionally substituted phenyloxycarbonyl, optionally substituted carbamoyl or lower alkyl, lower alkenyl, lower alkynyl, lower alkoxy or lower alkenyloxy optionally having a specific substituent, or R?1 and R2¿ may form together with the adjacent carbon atom a ring.
