Compounds represented by the following general formula (I) Ar<1>-S-R<1>-S-Ar<2>, and salts thereof, which have an effect of inhibiting ribonucleotide reductase to suppress the proliferation of cancer cells selectively wherein Ar<1> is aryl bearing 1 to 3 hydroxyl groups on the ring; Ar<2> is monocyclic heteroaryl containing as the ring-constituting atoms 1 to 3 heteroatoms selected from the group consisting of oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur and optionally bearing a substituent on the ring; and R<1> is -R<2>-X<1>-R<3>- [wherein R<2> and R<3> are each independently an optionally substituted C1-C10 carbon chain; and X<1> is CH2, O or N(R<4>) (wherein R<4> is a monovalent group or a monovalent atom)].
