PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently obtain a fatty acid ester that is useful as a diesel fuel, a lubricant base oil, a fuel additive or the like in high yield by allowing fat and/or oil to react with an alcohol in the presence of a lanthanoid metal alkoxide. SOLUTION: Fat or oil, for example, waste fat and oil or waste food oil is allowed to react with an alcohol represented by formula I (R4 is a 1-10C hydrocarbyl, a hydrocarbyl substituted with a 2-10C hydrocarbyloxy), for example, methanol or the like in the presence of a lanthanoid metal alkoxide represented by formula II (Ln is one of lanthanoid metal elements; R1-R3 are each a 1-10C alkyl), preferably in an amount of 0.1-30 mol% based on the fat and oil to give the objective fatty acid ester. |
