Movement vector determiner for various prediction methods

The movement vector determination device calculates movement vectors between successive frames of a film to allow prediction of the next frame and hence improve the efficiency of data compression. The device has a calculation device (1) which computes function values showing the degree of similarity between a picture segment in the current frame with various reference picture segments. The function values are loaded in parallel for each respective reference block according to a number of predefined predictive methods. A movement vector selection unit (3) receives the output function values for the reference blocks, and determines the movement vectors for the current picture segment in a parallel fashion, according to the respective predictive method.
