PURPOSE: An active matrix LCD device is provided to make a substrate plane since a black matrix to be installed in a counter substrate, is reduced or minimized so that an aperture factor is improved, thereby enabling to decrease a consumed power, and to improve an equality of cell gap and contrast. CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal layer is maintained put on a pair of substrates having at least one transparent side. A plurality of scan lines(101) are formed at one of the substrates. A plurality of signal lines(103) are formed at the scan lines(101) as matrix shape. A plurality of active elements are formed corresponding to each intersection points of the scan lines(101) and the signal lines(103). A plurality of pixel electrodes(106) are connected to the active elements. A plurality of counter electrodes(107, 107') is connected to the scan lines(101) so that a field is generated between the pixel electrodes horizontally with the substrates. A part of the counter electrodes is formed on the signal electrodes through an insulating film. A region wherein the signal lines are formed, is included a region in which the counter electrodes are formed and a region in which the scan lines(101) are formed.
