The emery machine, to raise the nap of fabric piecegoods, has a conventional brush roller (1) composed of plastics bristles (8) with emery particles through them. The fabric (2) moves over a support surface (3), which also acts as a counter surface for the brush roller (1). The positions of the brush roller (1) and/or the counter surface (3) can be adjusted in relation to each other. At least one brush roller (1) can be at each side of the fabric (2). The brush roller (1) rotates in or against the direction of fabric (2) travel, and at a variable or constant speed. The roller (1) can have bristles of a variable length and/or different bristle materials and/or the structure of the emery particles and/or the dia. of the roller can be varied. The bristles are fitted to the roller (1) to give zones without bristles. The counter surface (3) is a fixed and round or flat profile, or it can be an angled table with a pointed ridge. The counter surface can be a unit with a selective pointed and round table for deployment as required. It can also be a hollow table.
