PURPOSE: A tensioning device is provided to determine leakage gap in chains very simply and inexpensive and at the same time very precisely. CONSTITUTION: A tensioning device for traction means, in particular chains, has a piston (4)guided in the longitudinal direction in a housing (1, 3) and spring-loaded against the traction means. A dampening device (9, 18) is further provided to dampen the piston movements. Hydraulic fluid, in particular engine oil, can be discharged from a pressure chamber (16) through at least one leakage gap (13, 26) of the dampening device (9, 18). In order to provide a leakage gap with a simple and economic design, a rotationally symmetrical body, for example a cylinder (10), is arranged in a cavity (11, 24) of the dampening device (9, 18). The leakage gap (13, 26) is formed between the cavity wall (12, 25) and the outer surface of the rotationally symmetrical body (10).
