A point of sale tax reporting and automatic tax collection system including a tax register (205) at a retailer location processes and calculates the amount of sales or use tax due to the Government by a consumer on purchases made via the Internet, by mail, or any retail location (213). During the time of the transaction when payment is made by credit card, debit card, or any other form of electronic payment, the tax due to the Government is added as an additional, separate amount to the consumer's credit card or other form of electronic payment (209), and based on instructions from the tax register, the tax collected is routed to the appropriate government bank account (214).
