The lamp has a free-standing support post (12) incorporating a lamp unit (11) enclosed by a water-tight cover and supporting at least one light shield (13,14) which can be rotated about the longitudinal axis of the post and the lamp unit. Pref. the light shield is partially light reflective and partially transparent and extends in a curved path between top and bottom fixing points at which it is secured to the post.
