The clamping mechanism comprises a base jaw (22) and a tension jaw (20) whose lower side has a first front clamping face separated by a recess from a second rear clamping face with the two jaws having an interposed gap forming an insert pocket (16). An opening (24) extends from a rear section of the pocket upwards and forwards. A first narrow bridging section (44) connects the clamping jaw to the body section of the cutting tool whilst a second narrow bridging section (46) extends generally to the second clamping face.
