A switch has a conductive heat generating component which is forced away from two terminals by an elastic element triggered by a switch-off signal. A switch has a conductive heat generating component (25) between two connection terminals (11, 19), a trigger (29) actuated by a switch-off signal, an extensible elastic element (34) which can force the heat generating component away from the terminals and a holder for holding the elastic element in the compressed state. When the heat generating component is located between the terminals and the holder holds the elastic element in the compressed state, conduction between the terminals is maintained, but when the trigger is actuated and the heat generating component produces heat, the holder releases the elastic element to force the heat generating component away from the terminals, thus interrupting conduction between the terminals. Preferred Features: The heat generating component contains an exothermic medium comprising a metal powder, selected from B, Si, Fe, Si, Zr, Ti and Al, and a metal oxide, selected from CuO, MnO2, Pb3O4, PbO2, Fe3O4, Fe2O3 and Cr2O3.
