<p>An electrochemical cell is provided having an anode, a cathode and an electrolyte, the anode and optionally the cathode comprising a barium compound such as barium sulphate (BaSO4) or barium hydroxide (Ba(OH)2) as an additive. Alternatively, the cathode comprises barium hydroxide (Ba(OH)2) as an additive. The anode comprises an anode active material such as zinc, and the cathode comprises a cathode active material such as manganese dioxide, preferably electrolytic manganese dioxide. Also provided is a method of treating active material by mixing with the barium compound additive and drying the mixture. The anode and cathode are particularly adapted for use in an electrochemical cell having an alkaline electrolyte. The barium compound additive provides improved service performance for the cell.</p> |
