The cutter has drives moving arms (6-1,6-2) in the direction of the ceramic workpiece on both sides of a path of motion and up and down (7-1,7-2). A workpiece bearer arrangement (5) holds the workpiece (2) at a constant distance from the path of motion (4), and a thin wire (8) extends between the arms for cutting the ceramic workpiece and wire carrying sections driven by the drive arrangements to move the wire from one side to the other under constant tension to cut the workpiece.
