A hand-held imaging device is provided with a tracker for localizing its position and orientation during a manual scan of an object of interest. During an image acquisition phase, the imaging device captures images of the object from locations along a scan path and relays the images to a synthesizer which associates each captured image with the position of the imaging device during the capture. The captured images are stored by the synthesizer and are used subsequently, during a reconstruction phase, to reconstruct a three-dimensional representation of the object of interest.
