The dough roll (3) is places across a ribbed conveyor band (1) whose width is about one-third the length of the roll. The two ends (3') then hang down and fall into grooves in rails (5) before the roll is delivered to another conveyor (2) of equal width to conveyor (1). The dough roll (3) is places across a ribbed conveyor band (1) whose width is about one-third the length of the roll. The two ends (3') then hang down and fall into grooves in rails (5) before the roll is delivered to another conveyor (2) of equal width to conveyor (1). Carriages (7) alongside conveyor (2), and travelling with it by sliding in the grooves of rails (5), support the roll so that its ends pass between grips (6) and sensors (4). A wheel (9) is then lowered centrally onto conveyor (2) and driven forward so that the roll is formed into a U and withdrawn through the grips and sensors. As the ends leave the sensors the grips close and the plate on which grips and sensors are mounted is rotated inwards through 90 deg . to paste the two ends together. The roll is then held by suction cups on the carriage of wheel (9) to free it from the grips (6) and a former on the carriage moves forward to form the roll into its final shape. The sensors allow grips (6), and the movement of the swiveling plates, to work independently so that exact lengths of ends are presented at the final forming.
