A liquid -liquid extraction column comprises multiple mixer stage units in a stacked tower arrangement, with corresponding settler stages on the same levels. Light phase, organic extraction solvent, is fed from the bottom and flows upwards through the overflow channels (6, 8,11) and counter-current to the dense phase aqueous metalliferous solution which is introduced via inlets (7, 9). The mixer chambers are formed by insertion of floors in a first column which is arranged coaxially within a second, outer column, enclosing similarly formed settling chambers; the whole being of a fully welded construction. The stage agitators are mounted in inclined sleave tubes, through which they can be withdrawn intact. Sight glasses are connected to the sleeves to visually check for ingress of process liquor. The settler coalescer units are external to the column. The separation interfaces in the settling chambers are monitored by conductivity sensors.
