PURPOSE: An electron camera is to compress a video signal for multiple screens to a file size close to a target size in a short time, which video signal being obtained continuously in a continuous snapshot recording mode or a moving picture recording mode. CONSTITUTION: An electronic camera comprises a CCD imaging device(1). When a moving picture recording mode is selected and if a shutter button(15) is pressed down, a video signal for plural screen is generated based on a camera signal output from the CCD imaging device. A system controller(13) calculates an optimum compression ratio for compressing a previous video signal to a target size, and sets the optimum compression ratio on a video compression circuit(10). The video compression circuit compresses a present video signal being continuously obtained following the previous video signal, using the optimum compression ratio. When the compressed video signal for multiple screen is generated by the compression processing, a recording control circuit(11) records the compressed video signal on a memory card(12).
