PURPOSE: A chip type variable resistor is provided to prevent the defect of electric communication by firmly presenting the contacting and connecting on a brazing portion. CONSTITUTION: A chip-type variable resistor is composed of a recessed portion(1g) and a bottom plate(5a) of a first terminal(5). Herein, the recessed portion has at least two side surfaces opened on the lower surface of an insulating substrate. And, the first terminal is arranged in the recessed portion of the insulating substrate to prevent the crack of a ceramic plate. In the chip-type variable resistor, the recessed portion of the insulating substrate is formed on the angled portion of the insulating substrate to open the adjacent side surface orthogonal to the recessed portion. Moreover, the chip-type variable resistor has a clearance between the lower surfaces of the insulating substrate and the bottom plate. Thus, if the solvent is volatilized as the variable resistor is electrically and mechanically contacted with a print wire board by the cream brazing, a volatile solvent is exhausted to outside from the opening portion of at least two side surfaces of the recessed portion through the clearance. Therefore, the variable resistor has the effect to remove the defect of electric communication by firmly performing the contacting and connecting in the brazing portion.
