The engine, having a cylinder bounded at the top by the cylinder head, at least one inlet duct and one exhaust duct connected to the cylinder through valves (26, 30) in the lower face of the cylinder head, has a fuel injector (42) which leads into the cylinder via a discharge cavity (48) of reducing width towards the centre of the cylinder. The discharge cavity lies at a tangent to a plane lying perpendicular to the axis of the cylinder and with the cavity extending below the aforementioned plane. The cylinder's ignition plug is located at the centre of the cylinder head's lower face.
