Optical determination of the relative positions of objects in space

Optical equipment uses two optical systems (12,14) for determining the position of at least two objects (R) by use of a reference target and means for checking the alignment of one optical system relative to the other. Optical systems (12,14) are arranged to determine the position of objects (R) relative to respective observation marks (C12,C14). Reference system (12) with target (26) can be viewed by other optical system (14) without the object (R). A device (20) analyzes the target position relative to its observation mark (C14), allowing position of the observation mark (C14) to be determined, relative to the other mark (C12) of optical reference system, by comparison of target position (26) relative to both observation marks. An Independent claim is made for method of use of the installation.
