PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound which has (meth)acryloyl group(s), polyalkylene ether chain(s), and carboxy group(s) in its molecule, is effective for improving the adhesion to metals or other materials, as well as for improving the solubility to water and an alkaline aqueous solution, and is useful as a raw material for an acrylic resin. SOLUTION: A compound is provided shown by the formula: [CH2=CR- COO-(A-O)n-CO]2-R'-[COOH]2 [R is H or methyl; A is a (substituted) 2-4C alkylene; (n) is 1-50; R' is carboxylic acid moiety of a tetracarboxylic acid compound]. This compound is obtained by reacting a compound shown by the formula; CH2=CR-COO-(A-O)n-H (e.g. methacrylic acid propylene oxide adduct) with a compound shown by the formula (e.g. pyromellitic dianhydride) preferably at a hydroxy group/acid anhydride group equivalent ratio of 0.5-5, preferably at 40-160 deg.C.
