PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To smooth print images in the main scan direction in a unit finer than a dot size by limiting an output of laser beams when printing image data of right and left edge parts among an area to be printed in black. SOLUTION: A judge circuit 12 is set which searches for a pixel pattern agreeing with a pixel pattern constituting a matrix 11 among a plurality of preliminarily set pixel patterns, and judges target pixels to be printed in accordance with the pixel pattern. The judge circuit 12 limits an output of laser beams for the target pixel so as to eliminate projections and bumps in a main scan direction according to the surrounding pixel pattern. When the output of laser beams is thus controlled, pixels at a boundary area of right and left edge parts among an area to be printed in black can be smoothed not in units of dots, but minutely with a reduced dot size.
