PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent trouble of break of a two-dimensional array probe by driving with high level ultrasonic energy of a long time level, to provide a three-dimensional volume image with good image quality, and to allow real time display of a two-dimensional tomographic. SOLUTION: A controller 7 three-dimensionally and intermittently scans a two-dimensional array probe 1 to provide a three-dimensional volume image. This intermittent scan does not require driving of the two-dimensional array probe 1 with high ultrasonic energy of a long time level to prevent its damage to provide a three-dimensional volume image with good image quality. In addition, the controller 7 two-dimensionally scans the two-dimensional array probe 1 at a frame rate (real time rate) higher than that during the three-dimensional scan to provide a two-dimensional tomographic image. Thereby, real time display of the two-dimensional tomographic image is allowed.
