PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a desired protein by expressing a structural gene under the control of the 5' control region of a Pichia stipitis gene, and/or a promoter from Saccharomyces cerevisiae and/or a promoter from Schwanniomyces occidentalis. SOLUTION: This desired protein such as xylose reductase or xylitol dehydrogenase (in the case of Pichia stipitis) is obtained by expressing a structural gene encoding the objective desired protein under the control of the 5' control region of Pichia stipitis's XYL1 and/or XYL2 gene, and/or ADH1 promoter from Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and/or glucoamylase promoter from Schwanniomyces occidentalis.
