PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound useful in organic electroluminescent devices with slight chemical deterioration due to water, oxygen, etc., and slight physical deterioration due to light, heat, etc., having high-performance photonic function. SOLUTION: This new compound is a compound of the formula [A1 is a (substituted) aryl, lower alkyl, or the like; A2 is H, a (substituted) aryl, or the like; (n) is 0 or 1; R1a and R1b are each H, a halogen, or the like] which is obtained, for example, by the following process: fluorene is nitrated with fuming nitric acid in a solvent such as acetic acid at room temperature to 80 deg.C or so to form a compound which is then reacted with a compound of the formula: A1-(CH=CH)n-CHO (e.g. benzaldehyde) in a solvent such as n-butyl alcohol in the presence of an organic basic catalyst such as minute amounts of piperidine under heat reflux for several hours followed by reduction of the resulting compound using hydrochloric acid and stannous chloride dodecahydrate or the like to form a compound which, in turn, is reacted with an active halogen compound such as iodobenzene under heating in the presence of a catalyst such as copper iodide in a solvent.
