Adhesive compositions based on epoxy resins, processes for their preparation and laminated structures containing them

An adhesive composition comprises an organic solvent solution of a polyepoxy aliphatic polyether of a dihydric phenol having an epoxide equivalent of 100 to 3000 and a vinyl polymer having attached to the carbon chain monovalent radicals of the formula wherein Z is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical of 2 or 3 carbon atoms; R is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical of from 1 to 8 carbon atoms; R1 is a hydrogen atom, a hydroxyl radical or an alkyl radical of from 1 to 8 carbon atoms and R11 is a hydrogen atom, a non-tertiary alkyl radical of from 1 to 8 carbon atoms or an omega-hydroxy non-tertiary alkyl radical of from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, the amino nitrogen content of the polymer being at least 0.01% based on the weight of the polymer. Preferably, the composition also comprises an amine curing agent. Optional ingredients specified are polyamides, polysulphides, titanium dioxide, carbon black calcium molybdate and basic zinc chromate. The polyepoxides specified are polyepoxyalkyl polyethers of dihydric phenols, the solvents are alcohols, esters, ketones, aromatic hydrocarbons, and halogenated hydrocarbons and mixtures thereof. Vinyl polymers used in the examples are copolymers of acrylic or methacrylic acids and one or more of ethylene, butadiene, styrene, acrylonitrile, butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate and butyl methacrylate, which polymers have been esterified by reaction with ethylene imine, 1,2-propylene imine or 1,2-hexene imine; or copolymers of glycidyl methacrylate with one or more of acrylonitrile, styrene, ethyl acrylate, t-butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, ethyl methacrylate, butyl methacrylate and hexyl methacrylate which have been aminated by reaction with ammonia, methylamine, octylamine, or ethanolamine and for comparison diethylamine and t-butylamine. The adhesives are useful in the preparation of laminates of vinyl fluoride.
