A shaft seal comprises a sealing disc 1 of elastic material held in a U-shaped crosssection metal disc 2 the limbs 4, 5 of which are parallel, or substantially parallel, to one another and inclined relatively to the seal axis 6. When the seal is inserted in a bore 12, Fig. 5, of a shaft housing it may be deformed, as shown in the lower half of the figure, by a tool 15 or other means so that the outer periphery of the disc 2 is seated firmly against the bore and to assist such seating the outer periphery of the disc may have a sharp edge 7 or be knurled. The disc 1 has a sealing lip 3.
