PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pit having a high purifying power, capable of treating such solids as sludge in polluted water introduced from an inlet with the purifying material hardly clogged and not needing a large amt. of the purifying material and to reduce the cost by decreasing the frequency of material replacement. SOLUTION: This purifying vessel has a main body 1, a purifying material bed 3 which is charged in the main body 1 and purifies polluted water, an inlet pipe 7 to conduct the polluted water to the upper position of the main body 1 and an outlet pipe 8 for discharging the purified water from the lower position of the main body. In this case, a settling tank 9 is provided to the inlet pipe 7.
