A plug valve having a tapered plug that seats in a first flow passage in a valve body is disclosed. The plug defines a second flow passage cooperating with the first flow passage so that by rotating the plug through 90.degree. the plug valve is fully open or fully closed. The plug valve is opened by rotating the plug in a counterclockwise direction which also lifts the plug in an axial direction away from the valve seats. When the plug valve is rotated in a clockwise direction, the plug is rotated and moves in a downward axial direction into engagement with the valve seats. A resilient biasing member is provided between the valve seats and the valve body to continuously bias the valve seats into engagement with the plug.
