PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a braking device for an elevator capable of easily coping with various kinds of equipments and almost free from the constraint on the installation space. SOLUTION: A mount frame is mounted in a opposition to a rotary cylindrical surface of a rotary body 5 pivoted on a fixed part 1, and one end of an arm body 16 is pivoted on one side end of this mount frame. One side of a braking piece 18 opposite to the rotary cylindrical surface of the rotary body 5 is pivoted on the longitudinal intermediate part of the arm body 16, and an electromagnetic coil 23 is mounted on the mount frame. One end of an operating shaft 24 having a sucker 26 is connected to the arm body 16 and inserted into the electromagnetic coil 23, and further a pressing means 29 for energizing the arm body 16 in the rotary cylindrical surface direction of the rotary body 5 is mounted. The structural members such as the mount frame, the arm body 16, the braking piece 18 or the like of a braking device 33 are independently or integrally assembled and mounted to the fixing part of an equipment such as a hoist.
