PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize printing of high resolution in the drive control apparatus for a printer for detecting the moving position of a carriage on the basis of an encoder signal. SOLUTION: An ink jet printer is equipped with a linear encoder for detecting the moving position of a carriage and an emission signal PIXCLK of a drive cycle obtained by multiplying one cycle of the encoder signal of the linear encoder by a ratio 6/17 of encoder dissolving power and printing resolution is formed. An encoder of resolving power of m (lpi) is used to realize printing of horizontal resolution n (dpi) higher than the resolving power of m (lpi).
