PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a hair dye intended for dyeing fibers, esp. keratin fibers. SOLUTION: This hair dye contains pref. 0.01-10 wt.% of an indane derivative of the formula [R1 and R2 are, independently of each other, as follows: R1 is H, a halogen, cyano, hydroxyl, a 1-4C alkoxy, 1-6C alkyl, nitro, amino, an alkylamino, dialkylamino, C(O)H, COOR3, SO2R3 or C(O)CH3 (R3 is H, phenyl or a 1-6C alkyl); R2 is H, a 1-6C alkyl or phenyl] and/or a physiologically mild water-soluble salt thereof.
