[Also in Group IV (a)] Apparatus for butt splicing sheets of tacky rubberized stock comprises a frame and a table for the stock, a splicing head mounted on the frame for motion toward and away from the table and including splicing jaws for engaging the stock while the head continues motion toward the table, a support on the frame fixed relative to the table, stock presser foot means movably mounted on the support, means for resiliently urging the presser foot toward a retracted position away from the table, latch means mounted on the support for maintaining the presser foot in an advanced position against the stock as the head retracts and means on the head for disengaging the latch for retraction of the presser foot. As shown, the apparatus of the parent Specification is modified by the provision of a presser foot 32 extending from rods 33 and 31. A collar 37 is adjustably mounted on rod 31. for engagement by upper links 19 in order to press the foot 32 against the stock. On the rod 31 is an upper collar 38 that retains the main retract spring 39. In order to latch the foot 32 against the stock a latch collar 41 is fastened to the rod for engagement with movable latch bars 46 which carry plates 47 formed with sharp edges 48 for engaging the collar 41. Bars 46 are pivoted on pins 49 and have extensions 51 engaging spring-loaded plungers 52 which urge the latch bars towards the latched position. The lower ends of the latch bars 46 carry release rollers 54 that are actuated by a cam 56 on the rod 31. In operation, when the splicing head assembly descends the splicing jaws 26 engage the stock and the jaws are brought together laterally to make the splice. At the same time due to the action of the upper links 19 on collar 37, the presser foot is lowered on to the stock. At this time the latch collar 41 just clears the edges of plates 47 and the plungers 52 cause engagement of the latch means. After completion of the splicing action the splicing head assembly retracts, but the presser foot remains against the stock to prevent action of the jaws from opening up the splice. In this position the collar 41 is just about to be freed by the cam surface 57 acting on rollers 54. Further retraction of the head unlatches the rod 31 and the spring 39 quickly snaps the presser foot clear of the stock without danger of lifting the stock from the table. |
