A composite wheel is disclosed having at least two parts. The first part is a disc (16) which is secured to a vehicle hub. The second part of the composite wheel is a rim (14) which extends out from the disc. The rim includes a flange (38) which extends radially inwardly from its outer diameter. The flange is received by the disc and secured thereto. Tire bead retention members (40, 42) are secured to an outer rim of the disc and an inner rim. The fact that the diameter of the tire bead retention members is larger than the disc diameter eliminates, through continuous deformations of the rubber, the requirement of a wheel well being formed directly into the elongated skirt. Absent the wheel well, the rim may be spun or stamped. The disc may be made of aluminum alloy whereas the rim may be fabricated from steel. Retention devices (5B) are inserted into apertures to lock the tire beads onto the resilient retention members (40, 42).
|
