A method for detecting a diagnostic marker in a biological sample. In one aspect, the invention comprises providing a biological sample comprising DNA encoding sequences diagnostic for the diagnostic marker, mixing the sample with at least three primers comprising at least two differentially-labeled primers which recognize and bind to at least one intervening DNA sequence region in the DNA that is diagnostic for the diagnostic marker, incubating the mixture under conditions sufficient to result in detectable amplification of the intervening DNA sequence region, and analyzing the products of the amplification step to detect the individual amplification product diagnostic for the diagnostic marker.
