<p>A mobile telecommunications network (100) and method for identifying contiguous (A-C) and overlapping (D-F) location areas by assigning a code (200) to each location area (A-F) so that a particular location area can be differentiated from neighboring location areas. More specifically, the mobile telecommunications network (100) includes a first system (102) for managing a first location area (A) including a plurality of first cells (a). The first location area (A) and each first cell (a) are assigned a first location area identifier (LAI-A) and a first code (200). The mobile telecommunications network (100) also includes a second system (110) for managing a second location area (E) including a plurality of second cells (e). And, the second location area (E) and each second cell (e) are assigned a second location area identifier (LAI-E) and a second code (200), wherein the first code (200) and the second code (200) are used to differentiate between the first location area (A) and the second location area (E). The first system (102) and the second system (110) may be one and the same, and the cells (a, e) managed by both systems (102, 110) can belong to the same location area.</p> |
