In apparatus for the detection and/or removal of harmful oxidizable substance, e.g. carbon monoxide, in gaseous or liquid fuel, especially for a fuel cell generating electrical energy, there is a change in the marking property, especially color, pH and/or thermal and/or electrical conductivity, of the oxidant through which the fuel flows when it reacts with the oxidizable substance.
