The invention relates to an internal combustion engine (1), especially for a motor vehicle that is provided with an injection valve (10) with which the fuel to be injected for a combustion can be directly injected into a combustion chamber (4) of a cylinder (3) in a first operating mode during an intake phase and in a second operating mode during a compression phase. A spark plug (11) is provided with which the injected fuel can be combusted in both operating modes. A catalytic converter (13) is provided for storing nitrogen oxides which arise during combustion. The performance quantities of the internal combustion engine (1) can be controlled and/or varied in both operating modes by the control unit (12). A gear change into another gear step and a change-over into the first operating mode can be executed in an approximately simultaneous manner by the control unit (12), whereby the change-over into the first operating mode is provided for discharging the nitrogen oxides stored in the catalytic converter (13). |
