A method for inducing resistance of plants to mycotoxin-producing microorganisms wherein at least one compound capable of inducing said resistance is produced in the plant of interest by modulating the expression of at least one gene of said plant, wherein said compound has a structure shown in formula (1): <CHEM> wherein R represents -CH2OH or -CHO; n is an integer from 0-3; each R<1> independently represents OH or an organic substituent containing from 1-10 carbon atoms and from 0-5 heteroatoms, wherein the total number of carbon and heteroatoms in all R<1> substituents of said compound is no more than 15; and R4 represents hydrogen or an organic substituent containing from 1 to 10 carbon atoms, wherein said compound is non-phytotoxic to said plant.
