The method involves detecting a shut-down signal for the engine (10); interrupting fuel injection whilst maintaining ignition; maintaining a defined engine speed for a defined period or number of crankshaft revolutions after the shut-down signal using the electric machine or starter-generator arrangement (14) ; and finally stopping the engine using the electric machine. An Independent claim is also included for an arrangement for performing a controlled shut-down of an internal combustion engine.
