A process for bringing the water-gas reaction system CO2 + H2 /sX CO + H2O towards its state of equilibrium comprises contacting a gaseous mixture containing at least the reactants or the products of that system with a catalyst comprising the product of partly reducing the mixed oxides of Cu, Zn and Cr. The reactants may be furnished by the products of a catalysed hydrocarbon/steam reaction at elevated temperature. The ratio of hydrogen to carbon oxides in the gas fed to the Cu-Zn-Cr catalyst may be adjusted if desired by the addition of CO or CO2 on both, or of hydrogen, from a source other than a primary reformer. The process may be used for making CO2 and H2 at temperatures as low as 100-350 DEG C., and pressures of 50 atmospheres. Examples are given. Specifications 902,148, 908,505, 916,216 and 953,877 are referred to.ALSO:A process for producing oxygenated hydrocarbons comprises bringing a substantially sulphur-free gaseous mixture of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide at elevated temperature and pressure into contact with a catalyst comprising the product of partly reducing the mixed oxides of Cu, Zn and Cr. In particular, the synthesis of methanol from CO, CO2 and H2 at 200-300 DEG C. and 1-350 atmospheres is described. General reference is made to the production of alcohols, aldehydes, ketones and mixtures thereof; the catalysts may be used for both hydrogenation and dehydrogenation. Specifications 902,148, 908,505, 916,216 and 953,877 are referred to.ALSO:Copper, zinc and chromium are coprecipitated from solution as one or more compounds readily convertible to oxides, under such conditions that at the end of the precipitation stage at most a minor part of the precipitated copper compound is decomposed. The Cu, Zn, Cr composite may thereafter be reduced in a stream of hydrogen, as such, or supported on unspecified carriers. Specifications 902,148, 908,505, 916,216 and 953,877 are referred to. |
