A hand rim assembly 24 for a wheelchair has a tubular metal braking rim 102 and an elastomeric traction ring 100 located in a recess formed in the braking rim 102. The traction ring 100, by which the wheelchair is propelled, can be provided with a textured surface or crown to facilitate gripping. The braking rim 102 is formed from a material that has a coefficient of friction lower than that of the traction ring 100 such as polished titanium. The braking rim 102 can have a hollow compartment to reduce weight. The braking rim 102 could also be moulded of plastic. |
