PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image reader which improves the space efficiency of a 1st and a 2nd carriage by improving the structure of a carriage part. SOLUTION: A recessed part 2b is formed by cutting the center part of the base plate 2a of a carriage 2. Recessed parts 3b are formed by cutting both the corner parts of a 2nd carriage 3 on the side of the 1st carriage 2, to form a projection part 3c corresponding to the recessed part 2b of the 1st carriage. While both the carriages 2 and 3 are positioned at home positions, a projection part 3c of the 2nd carriage is fitted in the recessed part 2b of the 1st carriage, and the length 12 of both the carriages 2 and 3 in the vertical scanning direction becomes shorter by the fitting size.
